Freshening up the scent of your home is always a good idea, but using air freshening sprays or mass produced reed diffusers are full of unrecognizable ingredients. The reed diffusers that you purchase at stores tend to have overpowering scents that always have a chemical feel. This is especially bad for those who have sensitive noses.

Wouldn’t it be so much better to have your home smell fresh without inhaling processed materials? You can easily make your own reed diffusers that are all natural and even incorporate ingredients from your own garden.

Not only is your homemade reed diffuser a healthier and safer option, it’s incredibly simple to make. You can include it in a bathroom, hallway, or even bedrooms to give the area a light and fresh aroma.

The very first step starts with thinking about what your favorite scents are and which would suit your home the best. Remember, you’ll be walking past this diffuser and catching a whiff of whatever scent you’re using, so make it one that you absolutely love!

There are plenty of essential oils that you can choose from, so there’s bound to be a scent that you’ll enjoy having around your house. You can also feel free to mix and match scents that complement each other.

Here are some great scent combination:

-lavender and sweet orange

-pine, eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint

-lavender, ylang ylang, clary sage, and tangerine

-rosemary, cedar wood, mint

-lemon, rosemary, clove, and cinnamon

-bergamot, grapefruit, and lime

-lavender, bergamot, and geranium

The main ingredients you need to make your own reed diffuser oil are the carrier oil, essential oils, and alcohol. An alcohol base can be made with vodka, which works well in reed diffusers as it travels well up the reed sticks. You can also use an oil base instead of alcohol if you prefer. Coconut, safflower, almond oil, and grapeseed oil all work well.

For your base, you need to mix 70% base with 30% essential oil. Pour it into a ceramic or glass container, making sure that there is no crack or hole for it to leak. Even if you’re not using alcohol as a base, it’s best if you add in a bit as it will bind the oil and help thin it out. Isoprophyl or grain alcohol works well here, and just a few drops will do.

While purchasing bamboo or rattan sticks of course work, why not explore your yard and find some sticks to use instead? Just make sure the sticks you find are solid and porous enough for the liquid to move through them well. Clean them thoroughly and then bake them at 200 degree F for about 30-60 minutes, until they are fully dry.

Lastly, place your sticks into the oil jar. We recommend adding as many as possible to slow the liquid’s travel and keep your reed diffuser long lasting. The scent it will emit will be quite subtle but still refreshing. Enclosed spaces are best for these, as the scent may be lost in a large and spacious room. Once a week you’ll want to rotate the sticks to refresh the diffuser. This should last you for about 4-6 months.
